Ha, I bet all kinds of cats and squirrels hang out in there. Not to mention the occasional lost frisbee and baseball. It looks like the developers decided to build a house there without first clearing the land...and then just...I don’t know...wow.

This is classic aging hippie stuff. What you have there is an attempt at “greening” his place which is totally innappropriate for most retrofit applications by the way. There is a trend towards green roofs these days and although it is very environmentally friendly it doesn’t look as if your guy is doing it right. Ford just completed a new factory with a ginormous green roof, and there are several recent skyscaper projects with varying degrees of green roof. You can even find houses with green roofs, it’s just that most of them have flat or much lower pitched roofs than that example. Points awarded for caring about the universe, double point penalty for screwing it all up.
